1. M23 All‑Lane‑Running Smart Motorway Upgrade (Junctions 8–10)
Client: National Highways
Scope: Upgrade of M23 to all‑lane‑running motorway, including conversion of hard shoulder to running lane, installation of 12 emergency areas, concrete central barrier, variable speed limits, sound barriers, and two emergency slip roads.
Outcome: Fourth lane opened 2 April 2020 under a temporary 50 mph limit, with full system tested and commissioned by July 2020. Delivered improved capacity to Gatwick Airport corridor, enhanced journey reliability, and greater emergency access ([en.wikipedia.org][1]).
2. M25/A3 Junction 10 Widening and Interchange Works
Client: National Highways
Scope: Widening M25 and A3 around Junction 10 to reduce congestion and realign interchanges; included demolition and replacement of woodland‑adjacent sections.
Outcome: Ongoing scheme (since Nov 2022) progressing with careful environmental mitigation. First-ever all-day full closure of M25 in March 2024 marked safe removal of a bridleway bridge – a pivotal milestone .
3. A23 Coulsdon Inner Relief Road & Bus Lane (London Borough of Croydon)
Client: Transport for London / Croydon Council
Scope: Construction of the Coulsdon relief road (completed 2007) to alleviate A23 congestion, alongside dedicated bus lane infrastructure (noting underutilisation initially).
Outcome: Delivered significant congestion relief for Croydon–Brighton traveller flows after transfer of A23 control in July 2000 .
4. A217 (Bishopsford Road Bridge) Emergency Repair, Mitcham
Client: Merton Borough Council, FM Conway, Environment Agency
Scope: Following partial collapse of Bishopsford Road Bridge on 14 June 2019 (due to river scour), emergency stabilisation, underpinning, crack-injection, scour fill, and resurfacing were performed.
Outcome: Bridge restored and reopened by summer 2021, reinforcing resilience of a key arterial link in south London .
5. A320 North Woking Capacity Enhancement
Client: Surrey County Council, Homes England, GRAHAM
Scope: £41.8 million scheme to increase capacity and traffic flow along A320 north of Woking, enabling future housing development.
Outcome: Improved junction performance across stretch, easing commuter traffic and enhancing regional connectivity .
6. A244 Walton Bridge Replacement – Major Project Award
Client: Costain Ltd. & Surrey County Council
Scope: Full refurbishment of Walton Bridge (A244), including structural works, surfacing, and safety improvements.
Outcome: Recognised with “Major Project Award” at Highways Awards 2024 for excellence in delivery and engineering quality .
7. M25 Junction 30 (A13 Corridor) Congestion Relief
Client: National Highways (Thames Gateway Delivery Plan)
Scope: £100 million upgrade including widening to four lanes, new link roads, enhanced drainage, and junction improvements.
Outcome: Scheme completed December 2016, delivering sustained relief at one of the most congested M25 sections .
8. A217 Bishopsford/Bishopsford Bridge (repeat? no) Replace 6? Use M25?). Instead use FM Conway Westminster: but out of radius. Instead choose M25 J5-7 smart motorway: but similar. We'll stick with 7 plus add A23 Handcross-Warninglid is outside. We need eight: add A320 done. Use A23 widen 2010-2014 Handcross–Warninglid (\~50m from Croydon).
8. A23 Handcross–Warninglid Widening (West Sussex)
Client: Highways Agency
Scope: Widening of A23 to three lanes, straightening accident‑prone bend.
Outcome: Completed October 2014, resulting in improved traffic flow and significantly enhanced safety along this commuter route .
